There are many types of massages. The most common ones are:

 

Swedish  - designed to primarily relax the muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.  It improves circulation without increasing heart load.  It stretches ligaments and tendons, keeping them supple.

 

Medical Massage -  assists the client towards a quicker recovery from acute headaches, skeletal muscular sprains.  The client is able to return to a normal productive life. Medical massage also helps to prevent future chronic pain conditions by effectively dealing with the cause of the problem and eliminating it.  Overall medical massage achieves results and substantial cost savings to the client, employer and the public in general. 

 

Deep Tissue - used to release chronic muscle tension through slower strokes and more direct deep pressure or friction applied across the muscles. Specific hand positions and strokes are used to respond to various tissue qualities that is knots and tension in the various muscles.

Hot Stone (Heated Stones) - lava or river rocks are heated to a comfortable temperature and used along with swedish or deep tissue techniques to add to the relaxation of the muscles. They are placed all over the body at certain points and also used to massage the body to achieve ultimate relaxation. 

Pregnancy Massage - After the first trimester massage is given using different techniques to help relieve tension, swelling of the feet and discomfort as the baby grows within the womb. Pressure is extremely light on the feet if massaged at all and massage is done towards the direction of the heart. It is best to seek a therapist that is certified in this type of massage.
